FAQ

Car Shipping Questions

How shipping a car with FreightAutos works, from the quote to delivery.

How is the price for shipping my car worked out?

The main factors are the distance, how busy the route is, the size and weight of the vehicle, open or enclosed transport, whether the car runs, the time of year and how flexible your dates are. Our pricing page explains each one. Send a quote request and we come back with a price for your exact route.

Does FreightAutos own the trucks?

No. FreightAutos is a service of MilestoneBrokers LLC, a licensed property broker. We arrange your shipment with licensed auto carriers and coordinate it from pickup to delivery.

How long does car shipping take?

It depends on the distance, the exact pickup and delivery cities and the time of year. We confirm the expected pickup window and transit time with your quote.

What is the difference between open and enclosed transport?

Open transport carries your car on the type of multi-car trailer you see on the highway; it suits most everyday vehicles and costs less. Enclosed transport protects the car inside a covered trailer and costs more. Exotic, classic and high-value cars are handled by our sister brand, MilestoneBlack.

Can you ship a car that doesn't run?

Yes. Tell us it is inoperable when you ask for a quote. It needs a carrier with a winch, which can affect the price and the pickup date. The car must still roll, brake and steer to be winched onto the trailer.

Can I leave personal items in the car?

Most carriers don't allow personal items, or allow only a small amount in the trunk, and items left in the car aren't covered by the carrier. Ask us before you pack anything.

Do I have to be there for pickup and delivery?

You or someone you choose has to be there. The driver inspects the car with that person, notes its condition on the bill of lading, and both sign it at pickup and again at delivery.

What is a bill of lading?

It is the shipping document the driver fills in at pickup. It records the vehicle's condition and is signed at pickup and delivery. Check it carefully, because it is the record used if there is ever a damage claim.

Is my car insured during transport?

The carrier moving your car carries its own insurance. Before pickup you can ask us for the assigned carrier's certificate of insurance to see what it covers.

What if my car arrives damaged?

Note any new damage on the bill of lading before you sign it at delivery and take photos. Then follow the steps on our claims page; we help you prepare the claim with the carrier.

What does door-to-door mean?

The driver brings the car as close to your address as they can legally and safely reach. Car carriers are large, so on narrow or restricted streets the driver may meet you at a nearby parking lot or wide road.

How far ahead should I book?

The earlier you book, the more pickup dates you can choose from, especially in busy seasons such as the fall and spring moves to and from the South. Short-notice shipments are possible but have fewer options.

How do I get my car ready?

Clean it so the inspection is accurate, photograph it, remove personal items and toll tags, leave about a quarter tank of fuel, turn off alarms, and hand over a set of keys at pickup.

Can dealers and fleets ship several vehicles at once?

Yes. The quote form takes up to eight vehicles on one request, and we arrange recurring transfers for dealers and fleets. Tell us the vehicles, the locations and how often you ship.

Can you ship electric vehicles?

Yes. Tell us the car is electric when you ask for a quote. EVs are heavier than similar gas cars, which can affect which trailer and position fit. Leave enough charge for the car to be driven on and off the trailer.

How do I pay?

Payment terms are confirmed in writing when you book. Our terms page describes them.
